Nvidia Develops B30A AI Chip for China Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Despite facing export restrictions, the leading chip manufacturer, Nvidia, is reportedly developing a new artificial intelligence processor intended for the Chinese market. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Reuters indicates that this new chip, tentatively named B30A, will possess approximately half the processing capability of Nvidia's high-end B300 Blackwell GPU.
While surpassing the performance of the H20 GPUs currently approved for sale in China, the B30A will utilize a single-die architecture, a contrast to the dual-die construction of the more powerful B300. Nonetheless, the B30A is expected to incorporate features akin to the H20, including high-speed data transfer, NVLink support, and significant memory bandwidth.
According to Reuters' sources, the B30A project appears to be distinct from another chip under development by Nvidia for the same market.
In a statement, Nvidia emphasized its ongoing assessment of product possibilities, enabling them to compete within the bounds of governmental permissions. The company affirmed that all offerings comply with relevant regulatory approvals and are designed exclusively for positive commercial applications.
This development emerges amid a shift in the U.S. government's approach to AI chip exports to China. However, Reuters' sources cautioned that approval for the B30A remains uncertain.
As geopolitical rivalry intensifies the AI race, some observers argue that the U.S. must preserve its technological dominance by controlling critical technology supply to China. Conversely, Nvidia, along with similar companies, believes that relinquishing the significant Chinese market to competitors like Huawei would constitute a substantial competitive disadvantage. They see themselves as providing essential tools in a rapidly expanding field and want to maintain a presence in a vital market.
