Coinbase Deepens India Crypto Bet with CoinDCX Investment

Despite lingering ambiguity in Indian crypto regulations, Coinbase is reinforcing its stake in the local cryptocurrency exchange, CoinDCX. This latest investment bolsters CoinDCX's valuation to $2.45 billion following the funding round.
The funding constitutes an extension of CoinDCX's previous capital raise. Both companies have stated that the deal is contingent on securing regulatory approvals and adhering to standard closing procedures. While the specific investment amount and Coinbase's resulting ownership percentage remain undisclosed, this new financial injection has increased the Indian exchange's value since its last funding round in April 2022, which pegged the valuation at $2.15 billion.
CoinDCX verified with TechCrunch that Coinbase's recent contribution is an infusion of fresh capital. Coinbase, through its venture capital arm, Coinbase Ventures, has been a CoinDCX investor since 2020, previously participating in CoinDCX's Series D funding round in 2022.
Interestingly, this investment surfaces shortly after CoinDCX experienced a security lapse in July, leading to the loss of approximately $44 million in digital assets. It also arrives after prior rumors earlier this year suggested a potential acquisition of CoinDCX by Coinbase - claims which were refuted by CoinDCX's chief executive officer.
"This investment complements our growing presence in the region, where we also manage local operations and maintain relationships with key local partners," affirmed Shan Aggarwal, Coinbase's chief business officer, via a company blog post. "Combined, these efforts exemplify our unwavering conviction: we are confident that India and surrounding nations will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global digital economy."
After initially suspending operations in India over a year prior, Coinbase re-established its presence earlier in the year by formally registering with India's Financial Intelligence Unit. Coinbase also holds an investment in CoinSwitch, another prominent Indian crypto platform.
India, as the world's most populated nation with over a billion internet users, represents a crucial market for prominent American technology enterprises. Nevertheless, the South Asian nation remains a relatively nascent market for cryptocurrencies, owing, in part, to regulatory uncertainties and the government's imposition of a flat 30% tax on profits generated from digital assets, alongside a 1% tax on each transaction. The Indian government also limits overseas cryptocurrency exchanges unless they formally register with its financial regulatory body. Recent scrutiny was placed on 25 international platforms, including BingX, LBank, and CoinW, for non-compliance with registration requirements and anti-money laundering guidelines.
Coinbase's strategic decision to reinforce its backing of CoinDCX to grow its footprint within India is logically sound, given the Indian exchange's robust local market presence and its sizable user base of over 20.4 million. As of July, CoinDCX reported customer assets exceeding ₹100 billion (approximately $1.12 billion), an annualized group revenue of ₹11.79 billion (around $133 million), and annualized transaction volumes across all its products totaling ₹13.7 trillion (roughly $154.6 billion).
Beyond India, CoinDCX expanded its reach into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region the previous year through the acquisition of BitOasis. Coinbase could potentially use this expanded geographical footprint to further bolster its own presence in the MENA region, which is presently among the world's fastest-growing markets for digital assets.
According to a company statement, the newly acquired capital will be strategically allocated to improving existing product offerings, attracting new users, expanding into new international markets, and promoting educational initiatives.
"We foresee considerable synergy with Coinbase in establishing a compliant and regulation-abiding crypto ecosystem within India, the MENA region, and other markets," stated Sumit Gupta, co-founder and CEO of CoinDCX.
